Teaching yourself self-defense isn't really a good idea

I started this blog today because I've had a lot of self-defense-related thoughts and ideas bouncing around, and have been sitting with the trauma of recently losing a friend and his wife to one the wildest act of violence I've ever heard of. As a result, I've been talking a lot with family and friends about it, and thinking about how I can channel passions for self-defense, firearms, and helping people into something proactive.

Here's the gap that I think this blog will fill (and things I think it shouldn't be).

1) It will be a place for me to consolidate and share some of the self-defense and general preparedness info and synthesis that I'm gathering. I'll be saving this blog for topics that don't fit under my prepper blog. Self-defense is a big part of prep, but I'm starting to think I want to say more about self-defense without watering down the prepper blog.

2) It will be a place for me to share my perspective on self-defense examples that I see online, in the media, etc., or examples friends share with me. As a former martial artist, I inevitably end up talking about this stuff with people, and my new approach to self-defense leaves me compelled to fill in the gaps between martial arts training and self-defense training. I'm not the only one doing this, and I'll refer to other bloggers, writers, and YouTubers as they're helpful.

3) This blog won't be anyone's sole source for self-defense training. One thing Hollywood got right about martial arts and self-defense (via Karate Kid), is that you can't learn this shit from a book. My Krav Maga training the past few years has reminded me how important training (and specifically, scenario-based, high-pressure training) is in a comprehensive self-defense skill-set.

4) This won't be a blog for forwarding one approach over another. I'll probably post a lot about Krav Maga, because, in my experience so far, it's the only widely-available "system" that addresses self defense realistically. It's not the only system or martial art that can give you good self-defense training. And not all Krav Maga training is good. I just happened to find an excellent school and network. So while you'll find me fan-boying from time-to-time, let's keep this professional and empirical. All techniques can be tested and refined.

Feel free to engage in discussion on the blog posts. Chances are, others will have whatever comment or question you have. If you email me, I'll probably miss it. So let's keep it all public.
